I rode Master Hope in his first ever race Result
Finished 7th / 22 ran
Master Hope was a horse I looked after at David Nicholson’s Jackdaws Castle racing stable
The Duke let me ride this horse in a couple of bumpers, at Sandown (7th behind Go Ballistic) and 8th at Doncaster
It was very satisfying to get the ride on this horse
“Why?”
When I applied to a “Stable Staff Wanted at Jackdaws Castle” advert in The Sporting Life “The Duke” told me “Richard, you are not coming here to ride in races” which with the help of Master Hope was a statement I proved wrong
Master Hope had his problems, breathing trouble and he also fractured his cannon bone on the gallops at home
He was owned by the same people who owned Waterloo Boy and Another Coral
The horse never won a race and I think I’m right in saying he met with an unfortunate end but when I knew him he was an absolute joy to look after
I loved this horse ❤️

Hill Beagle was a funny little horse who could be quite difficult to ride at home… he hung to the left quite a lot
On the track he was a good ride over both hurdles and fences and seemed to be suited by all-weather hurdles
We won 4 handicap hurdles together all at Southwell
He wasn’t very tall in height, I would have have thought under 16 hands but he was well built and strong
Unfortunately he broke down with me when running 2nd in this novice chase at Hereford… he should have won and this was the last time I rode him on the racecourse

Not jocked up for Fine Warrior (in a Conditional Jockeys race)… Nottingham was the first time I’d ridden this horse, at least I got him round and I did on three other occasions too… it took the horse 17 races over hurdles before he won a race (21 including flat races)… some level of patience…

… not jocked up for Roy Prince either, I mean who else in their right mind was going to ride this poor broken down horse apart from me… he hung, run and jumped righthanded so violently he would literally take any horses in his way with him… not being jocked up was all part of the silly games that were going on at that time… let’s put it like this “Blood was thicker than water!”
