Horses I looked after in racing

Charter Party (from 1985 to 1987) who won the Ritz Club Handicap Chase and the Golden Miller Chase … I also led him up in the 1987 Cheltenham Gold Cup when he fell … the horse had numerous problems 1986/87 such as, following his victory in the Golden Miller he’d had his legs blistered, been hobdayed and as a result was not turned out for a break after the 1985/86 season – he was kept in his stable all Summer ’86 (in other words he got no holiday), then he came back into training, 10 weeks roadwork (most of the time by himself) – besides that, he also had some sort of injection in his rump go funny on him which left a lump that needed draining (after the 1987 Gold Cup) – possibly a dirty needle – he was not the same horse as he’d been in 1985/86 – after all that, then he wins the 1988 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Silver Wisp (1993 to 1995), the Jockey Club Stakes winner … this horse came to The Duke for jumping and I schooled him in the jumping paddock over the logs on his first morning at Jackdaws Castle … I also schooled him over hurdles … just a pity he never ran National Hunt for us because the horse jumped well

Viking Flagship (1994 to 1995), successful in the Tingle Creek Chase, the Castleford Chase and the Queen Mother Champion Chase … Favourite Memory – I will never forget the morning that The Duke let me school Flagship over hurdles – that was a really good experience for me
